The merely way to know if you need this repair is to remove your toilet.
After the toilet's removed, inspect the closet flange.
You lot'll have to remove your toilet anyway if you have a water leak under the bowl.
Toilet flange repair is one of those things…you don't know you need information technology until you lot see a leak or see the flange when replacing a toilet.
One of my favorite supplies, when removing toilets, is Oatey LiquiLock.
This turns your toilet h2o into a gel and prevents the water from spilling on your flooring.
I don't know well-nigh you lot but cleaning up nasty toilet h2o isn't on my to-do list.

Just what's the best way to do this?
Toilet Flange Repair…What You Need to Know
If yous watched the video to a higher place you know about Charlie.
He's one of our favorite plumbers in Pittsburgh because the guy is always happy.
Charlie taught u.s.a. how to repair a toilet flange and today we're passing along those tips to you lot.
The showtime tip Charlie taught the states is if your closet flange is broken you'll need to repair it.
Today nosotros're going to share three options for repairing a toilet flange.
Your first option is to purchase a replacement cupboard flange ring.
This has to be secured to the subfloor with screws.
A 2nd option is to use a closet flange repair kit.
It's a smashing option if your existing closet flange is broken or rusted. Due to its construction y'all can only use a toilet flange repair ring on PVC or ABS pipes.
Option 3 is the easiest. It's an a Push Tite gasketed cupboard flange.
Only push this downward into the old closet flange and secure it to the wood subfloor with galvanized or stainless steel screws.
Charlie taught u.s. this second tip, a closet flange should be flush or up to 1/4″ above your finished floor.
The reason why is because wax rings compress over time.
If the closet flange is below the finished flooring, a gap will grade between the bottom of the toilet bowl and top of the wax ring.
This gap is where h2o leaks when y'all flush your toilet…and we all know what's in toilet water.
YUCK!!!
How do yous raise the closet flange?
Utilise a Closet Flange Extender
Closet flange extender rings are homo/woman'south best friend when repairing closet flanges.
These come up in 1/4″ and ane/two″ increments.
Yous can notice them at the local home shop or hardware shop.
Also, you'll demand extra long cupboard flange bolts, e.thousand. three i/2″ bolts.
These bolts will slide into the old flange.
We tried to explain Charlie'due south repair to the guy at my local plumbing supply warehouse and he was totally not following the concept.
So hopefully we do a better job explaining information technology to you.
Basically what we're doing is sandwiching the new closet flange extender band (or spacer, whichever) onto the erstwhile closet flange.
Merely yous need the closet flange bolts to be long plenty to fit upwards through the base of the toilet bowl. Furthermore, clean off all the onetime wax from the closet flange using a putty knife earlier installing the closet flange extender.
We used a ane/ii″ closet flange extender in this projection because information technology extends almost one/8″ above the finished tile floor.
Also, I'll be installing a new American Standard VorMax toilet in this bath.
The crude in size for the VorMax is 12 inches, i.e. the distance from the cupboard flange bolts to the wall is 12 inches.
Know your rough-in earlier installing the cupboard flange bolts because the last thing you desire is to identify your bolts 13 inches from the wall when you need them to be at 12 inches.
Don't mensurate from the baseboard to the the cupboard flange bolts equally this volition give yous the incorrect rough in.
If you lot do mensurate from the baseboards to the bolts merely deduct the baseboard width from your dimension.
Dry fit the closet flange extender onto the onetime closet flange and place a torpedo level on information technology.
If you're in luck the closet flange extender will exist level, but if it'southward not…yous'll have to shim your toilet when yous install it.
Non a big deal, merely a good thing to know.
Utilize a generous bead of 100% silicone caulk on top of the sometime closet flange.
And to the bottom of the new cupboard flange extender.
Either slide the new closet flange bolts into the old flange before calculation the extender or add them subsequently you adhere the extender to the old flange.
Consequently, we chose to add 1 of the bolts to the sometime flange start since it was a tight fit.
Add metal washers and nuts to the cupboard flange bolts.
Finally, tighten the nuts to the bolts with a crescent wrench until the bolts are nice and snug.
Lookout man our step-by-step video to run across all the details up close and personal…good thing these videos aren't in 4D, just call up about that :/
